Importance of Training and Development

All organisation needs trained staff in order for the work to be done in a safe and correct manner which brings about high productivity.

In the video, you can see that a child pump water into the oil tank.  Many people would find this funny.  However, many times in organisations, we can see funny things carried out by staff.

This is due to the fact that many staff are not properly trained.  Of course organisations will say they only employed qualified staff for the work thus they should be able to get things done.  This is true to a certain extend though.  There are people who are very good in studying and taking exams, and these will have all the required qualifications proving their knowledge.  However, when coming to doing the real work, these people might not be doing that well.

We are living in a world where Skills training is becoming more and more important.  Skills training is not only about hard skills, but about Core Critical Skills (the ability to use the various tools) like:

  • Critical-Thinking; ability to problem solve challenges
  • Communication; ability to communicate effectively
  • Creativity; ability to innovate to connect
  • Collaboration; ability to co-create solutions and get things done

Skills are something that requires time to master, thus organisations need to have opportunities for their staff to develop their skills and also provide the necessary encouragement and rewards.

I remember once a HR manager of a MNC wanted to cut cost and cancelled all staff training, though there was supposed to be a budget allocated for each staff.  Such action is actually very detrimental for the organisation.

PERFORMANCE DEVELOPMENT

When designing a training and development plan for your staff, you need to consider the following:

  • Operations to be performed and their benchmark
  • Draft out the Skills levels and verification methods
  • Focus more on verification, and make learning part of the process and not the end-goal
  • Encourage and reward the staff who excel
